Symposium Announcement
As preventing sprawl and providing vibrant pedestrian
oriented development becomes an important goal in the North Bay,
getting up to speed on Smart Growth and Form-Based Smart Codes has
become essential.
The
Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy, along with their
co-sponsors, are proud to present “How to Build Sustainable
Communities: A North Bay Symposium on Smart Growth” on July
29, 2005, from 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Windsor Town Council
Chambers.
The Symposium will highlight existing projects
that demonstrate the value of this approach toward development.
Although the North Bay regional area is the focus, attention will
also be paid to other successful Smart Growth developments around
the state.
Windsor
has planned and partially developed a model for how towns can support
well-designed, mixed-use development, so the event will take place
adjacent to the Town Green in the Windsor Town Council Chambers.
The story of how Windsor, Petaluma and other Sonoma County downtown
redevelopments have been conceived and are being implemented will
be a topic for presentations. An important topic will be the fiscal
and economic rewards of Smart Growth, and of Smart Code adoption
and implementation, along with prospects for housing affordability
through this type of development. Since most of the communities
in the North Bay region are on the future passenger train line,
transit-oriented development as a significant factor in planning
for Smart Growth will be a key discussion.
To
provide a provocative look at Smart
Growth, the keynote speaker will be
Dr. Alex Kelter, Chief of the EPIC
Branch at the California Department of
Health Services. His talk will focus on
the the Impact of Smart Growth on Health and the Economy.
There will also be presentations on panels by development
practitioners who are experienced in the design, financing and building
of these types of projects in the North Bay and in California.
Presenters
will include: Orrin Thiessen, developer of the Windsor Town Green
Village and Laura Hall, a principal with Fisher & Hall Urban
Design, a nationally known advocate for form-based codes, who helped
to plan the Windsor development, was instrumental in Petaluma’s
adoption of a Smart Code, and has worked with Cotati’s downtown.
Other panelists will include experts in affordable housing/mixed
use development, in transit-oriented development, in the nuts and
bolts of financing these projects, which can be extremely lucrative,
and an architect who understands the special requirements of Smart
Growth.
Don’t
miss the optional tour of the Windsor Town Green, starting at 1:00
p.m.! Continental breakfast will be provided, but lunch will not
be served so that attendees can enjoy lunch in one of several restaurants
on the beautiful Windsor Town Green.
Space is limited. Advance ticket purchase is recommended
as the event is expected to sell out!
